Canfield, March 4, 2009 — Mahoning County Career and Technical Center students competed in the 2009 SkillsUSA Regional Competition and earned several of the top prizes. Their performance earned six students spots at the state competition in Columbus April 24 and 25.
The regional competition, at Ashtabula Joint Vocational School on February 28, offered a wide variety of individual and team competition categories. Students were given a task to complete on site at the competition and then judged by industry professionals.
Linda Tomko, Cosmetology instructor and adviser of SkillsUSA, said, “It’s a great opportunity for the students. The students really sacrifice so much of their own time outside of class to compete. They really have to want to do it.” The students will be honored with a banquet and awards ceremony Saturday.
Medal winners advancing to state are:
Danielle Hobbs of Boardman, silver medal Nail Care
Steve Hunt of Canfield, silver medal CNC Milling
Jaymie Ruby of Western Reserve, bronze medal Nurse Assisting
Nicole Ruiz of Jackson Milton, silver medal Job Skill Demo Open
Justin Storm of Crestview, bronze medal Industrial Motor Control
