Canfield, March 10, 2009 —Joyce E. Brooks, a board member for the Mahoning County Career and Technical Center, will be presented with two awards from the Ohio School Boards Association at the regional spring conference— the Award of Achievement and the Master Board Member Award.

The conference will be held on Wednesday, March 18, 2009 at Austintown Fitch High School. Brooks has been a member of the board since 1997 and spent more than 40 years in education, beginning at the age of 18 as a third grade teacher. Her career as an educator encompasses work at Greenford, Canfield and Youngstown City schools as a teacher, the Mahoning County Education Service Center as an administrator and Youngstown State University as an adjunct professor and program coordinator for College Tech Prep.  Brooks also serves as a board member for the Mahoning County Education Service Center.

The award of Achievement is given to school board members in recognition of their commitment to training and leadership activities on their boards of education and region and statewide OSBA Activities. The Master Board Member Award is given to school board members who dedicate themselves to improving their boardmanship skills and knowledge.

Before being considered for the honor, an Ohio public board of education member must complete numerous professional development workshops and activities. Leadership on school boards or educational service center governing boards, active involvement in student leadership and other statewide OSBA activities are but a few of the requirements considered in bestowing the Master Board Member designation. The Ohio School Boards Association is in its 54th year of service to public education and representation of the state’s public school boards.
